Menopause

Period stops at the Menopause. This is completely normal and natural. However it is associated with some unwelcome symptoms and some significant physiologic changes. While the average age at menopause is 51, there is a great deal of variation. Menopause before the age of 45 is considered “early”,  but still normal; Menopause before the age of 40 is considered “premature”: This is unusual, and generally triggers a search for an underlying cause.

SYMPTOMS OF MENOPAUSE

  • Hot flashes.
  • Night sweats.
  • Disturbed sleep.
  • Problems with mood/memory/concentration.
  • Vaginal dryness and painful intercourse.

HOT FLUSHES

Hot flashes as a wave of heat rising through the chest, head and neck, and associated with blushing, sweating, and a rapid heart rate. At night, we call these “night sweats”. A hot flash typically lasts for a few minutes, and at their worst they can happen 20 or 30 times a day. Obviously, this is an unpleasant sensation, and for many women it can be socially embarrassing.

SLEEP DISTURBANCES

Hot flashes are closely related to the sleep disturbances. You may awake in the early morning hours by night sweats and unable to fall back asleep. Lack of estrogen can also have direct adverse effect on sleep quality.

VAGINAL DRYNESS/ PAINFUL INTERCOURSE

Vaginal dryness is common after menopause. The tissues of the vagina and vulva become fragile and sensitive. This is known as atrophy. You may have burning with urination or may suffer from frequent urinary tract infections.

In the vagina, a lack of estrogen means you will have a more difficult time becoming lubricated when aroused; sex may be uncomfortable or downright painful.

Don’t suffer in silence – this can be treated.

Every woman’s experience of menopause is different.

Some women can easily “sweat it out,” while others will need additional support.

Fortunately, there are a variety of solutions available for menopausal symptoms and it is not always HRT or ERT.

If you have these symptoms and want to discuss it further then kindly fill in the online form or book an appointment. We will make a personalised management plan for you.
